What if moving in and out of dorms didn’t mean throwing away perfectly good items? What if students could easily pass down what they no longer need to others who actually do?

That’s the idea behind YearUsable, an on-campus social enterprise designed to make student life more sustainable, affordable, and connected. YearUsable is a website where students can buy and sell used and reusable dorm items, from storage bins and hangers to room decor and school supplies, all within their own campus community.

Over the past few months, I have been working to turn this idea into something real. The first major step was building the website itself. This involved designing a platform that is simple, accessible, and actually useful for students. I had to think through how users would interact with the site like how they would post items, search for what they need, and trust the process. Creating something functional wasn’t just about building the website, it was about understanding behavior and making the experience as intuitive as possible.

Once the site was up and running, the next step was to get people to actually see and use it. To start building awareness, I designed and got help to put up posters around dorms to introduce YearUsable and explain its purpose. I also set up a promotional stand, where I talked directly with students about the platform. These conversations were one of the most valuable parts of the process so far. Not only did they help spread the word, but they also gave me real and unfiltered feedback such as what students liked, what confused them, and what would make them more likely to use it.

One thing I realized quickly is that having a good idea isn’t enough. People need to understand it and see others using it before they feel comfortable joining. Getting those first users has been one of the biggest challenges so far. At the same time, there has been real progress. The website is live, students are aware of it, and there has been interest shown. The feedback I’ve gotten has also been really helpful in figuring out what to improve next.

Moving forward, my main focus is on growing the platform and getting more students involved. I plan to keep improving the website based on feedback so it’s easier to use. I also want to reach more people through better promotion and possibly working with student organizations. One of the biggest opportunities will be the end of semester move out period which is when students often throw away items they no longer need. This is the perfect time for YearUsable to help connect students and reduce waste, so I’ll be preparing for that by increasing awareness and making sure the site is ready for more activity.
